Court Backlogs Harm People Awaiting Trial; Fuel Community Solutions as Courts Reopen

COVID-19 postponed trials and closed courthouses across New England, leading to concerns about timely due process as the system reopens.

Massachusetts’ trial courts, which have the highest case volumes in New England, estimate a backlog of about 3,700 cases. Many only started resuming trials between February and May. Effective July 12, two orders will further lift COVID restrictions that have held up trials in the Bay State.
