The Massachusetts Senate Just Adopted the Clean Slate Amendment!

Great news! The Massachusetts Senate adopted Senator Cindy F. Friedman’s Amendment #511 (Clean Slate) to the economic development bill!

The Clean Slate amendment will replace Massachusetts’s burdensome petition-based process with a system that automatically seals eligible criminal records once the applicable waiting period has passed. Instead of requiring people to know that they qualify, understand complicated sealing rules, complete paperwork, and navigate the court system, the state would be responsible for identifying eligible records and sealing them.

Many, many thanks to all the advocates who’ve made calls, emails, and visits to their legislators, to make sure they know that automated CORI-sealing is critical for our economy, our communities, and hundreds of thousands of individuals’ well-being.

More info to come. Our work isn’t over yet to make Clean Slate a law in Massachusetts.
